Meet Joel
Hi! I'm Joel, a 13-year-old beekeeper in my second year of this exciting journey. My interest in bees sparked when I was 9, after reading an article about catching swarms in GRIT magazine. From that moment, I was hooked and begged my parents for bees, but they said I had to study first. Determined, I dove into The Backyard Beekeeper by Kim Flottum, reading it multiple times.
With the guidance of a mentor and after saving all my money, I finally purchased my first two nucleus colonies in April 2023, at age 12. My first year was a huge success—I harvested 160 lbs of honey and even won first place at the Nebraska State Fair! This year, I expanded to 6 colonies, harvested an incredible 1,000 lbs of honey, and won first place and Best of Show at the State Fair!
Next year, I plan to expand my colonies even more, and I’m excited to attend the North American Honey Bee Expo in January to learn from the best in the industry. Bees have taught me so much about nature and myself, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
