Meet Joel
Hi! I'm Joel, a 14-year-old beekeeper starting my third year of this exciting journey. My interest in bees sparked when I was 9, after reading an article about catching swarms in GRIT magazine. From that moment, I was hooked and begged my parents for bees, but they said I had to study first. Determined, I dove into The Backyard Beekeeper by Kim Flottum, reading it multiple times.
With the guidance of a mentor and after saving all my money, I finally purchased my first two nucleus colonies in April 2023, at age 12. My first year was a huge success—I harvested 160 lbs of honey and even won first place at the Nebraska State Fair! This year, I expanded to 6 colonies, harvested an incredible 1,000 lbs of honey, and won first place and Best of Show at the State Fair!
In 2025, I plan to expand my colonies even more! I had a wonderful time attending the North American Honey Bee Expo in January, where I had the opportunity to learn from the best in the industry. My mom and I entered our HOT Honey into the NAHBE competition and won 4th place! Bees have taught me so much about nature and myself, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
